Breaking News: Israeli Scam Operator Gal Barak to Be Extradited to Austria

A Major Development in Europe’s Battle Against Financial Fraud

Between 2012 and 2018, global losses from binary options scams are estimated to have reached up to $50 billion, with millions of victims affected worldwide. Authorities across the globe, particularly in the United States and Europe, have intensified efforts to prosecute the key players behind these fraudulent operations.

One of the most significant breakthroughs comes from Austria, where authorities have successfully secured the extradition of Israeli national Gal Barak, often described as one of the masterminds behind Europe’s binary options fraud network.

U.S. Trials Expose Israeli Scam Network

In the United States, law enforcement has been cracking down on Yukom Communications, a notorious binary options operation:

  • Lee Elbaz, former CEO, was convicted of fraud in August 2019.

  • Five additional Yukom employees have pleaded guilty, agreeing to serve prison terms and pay heavy fines.

Gal Barak’s E&G Bulgaria – The EU’s Yukom Equivalent

In Europe, Gal Barak, through his company E&G Bulgaria (formerly E&G Finance), has mirrored the tactics used by Yukom:

  • Operated fraudulent broker brands including:

    • XTraderFX

    • SafeMarkets

    • Golden Markets

    • OptionStarsGlobal

  • Ran illegal boiler rooms in:

    • Bulgaria

    • Serbia

    • Bosnia-Herzegovina

    • Kosovo

According to Scam-Or Project investigations, these operations are believed to have created over 30,000 victims, potentially losing up to $200 million.

EU Arrest Warrant and Austrian Action

  • In early 2019, Austrian authorities arrested Uwe Lenhoff, a key accomplice of Barak.

  • Following this, an EU-wide arrest warrant was issued against Barak.

  • Barak was later detained in Sofia, Bulgaria, and placed under house arrest in an affluent suburb.

Now, after months of legal proceedings and diplomatic pressure, he is set to be extradited to Austria for trial.

Marriage and Money Laundering: Marina Barak’s Role

To reinforce his ties to Bulgaria and possibly avoid extradition, Gal Barak married his long-time partner Marina Andreeva, who now goes by Marina Barak.

According to Austrian investigators, Marina Barak served as the CFO of the fraud operations, managing illicit funds and coordinating money laundering schemes.

A Turning Point in European Enforcement

Barak’s extradition marks Austria’s second major victory, following the arrest of Uwe Lenhoff. Austrian prosecutors are now preparing charges related to:

  • Investment fraud

  • Cybercrime

  • Money laundering

Meanwhile, Barak’s partners face separate investigations in Germany, the United States, and other EU countries.

Global Context: Scams with Israeli Roots

Investigations reveal that Israeli-run scam hubs have exploited financial loopholes across jurisdictions:

  • Boiler rooms staffed by Israelis in the Balkans

  • Shell companies in tax havens and Eastern Europe

  • Coordinated money laundering via crypto and online payments

Common Scam Tools

  • Fraudulent trading platforms (e.g., Tradologic, PandaTS)

  • Offshore banks and processors

  • “White-label” scam websites under false pretenses

Final Thoughts: Justice on the Horizon

This extradition sends a strong message across Europe: cross-border scams will no longer go unpunished. Authorities are finally connecting the dots between:

  • Scam brokers

  • Payment facilitators like Payvision

  • Shell companies and insiders

  • Digital fraud ecosystems spanning the EU, Balkans, and beyond

What Comes Next?

  • Court proceedings in Austria against Barak and his accomplices

  • Further investigations into associated financial institutions

  • Possible asset recovery efforts for tens of thousands of victims
